U.S. wheat exports and accumulated sales are off to the fastest pace seen in recent years. Data through August 28 indicates the U.S. has 445 million bushels in accumulated exports and sales. The chart below shows this pace is substantially higher than last year’s 362 million bushels. While last year’s increased sales pace was due to larger HRS and white wheat sales, this year the rapid pace is due to bigger sales of HRW. Two years of drought had greatly reduced HRW supplies available for export and prices were not competitive into many export regions. This year HRW has become more price competitive due to better supplies and a slightly weaker dollar.
Mexico, the top U.S. wheat customer, leads the pack on demand this year at 75 million bushels, up 22% from a year ago. While sales to our next largest customers, the Philippines and Korea are slightly lower, they remain large, consistent buyers of U.S. wheat over 70 million bushels combined. Sales are slightly higher to Japan and Taiwan. The first three months of the marketing year have seen a threefold increase in sales to Nigeria and a doubling of sales to Guatemala. Sales have increased to other markets including Indonesia, Vietnam, Colombia, Ecuador, Dominican Republic and Peru.
