The 2025 North Dakota Wheat Variety Survey is now available. The survey details the popularity and distribution of wheat varieties across the state for hard red spring wheat, durum and hard red winter wheat. The survey was conducted by the North Dakota Field Office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Funding for the survey was provided by the ND Wheat Commission, the ND Ag Experiment Station and the ND State Seed Department. The survey is a source of valuable information for producers and the boarder wheat industry. It provides a picture of variety trends and helps to better define the top agronomic needs of producers. Public and private breeding programs use the data to monitor the success of their programs and position themselves to better develop varieties to capture a great share of acreage and meet producer needs. The results are used in educational efforts with customers as well.

This year’s variety survey confirms the trends we’ve seen over the past decade or so for spring wheat – more varietal options mean more varieties accounting for smaller percentages of acres. The majority of varieties grown have a two percent or less share of acreage. The top five HRS varieties and their percent of North Dakota acres are:

1. WB9590 – 15.9%

2. SY Valda – 9.0%

3. AP Murdock – 8.2%

4. MN Torgy – 7.7%

5. AP Smith – 3.2%

In the case of durum, the top variety was planted on nearly half of the state’s durum acreage, with other varieties making up one to ten percent of the acreage each. The top durum varieties for 2025 are:

1. ND Riveland – 48.1%

2. AAC Stronghold – 9.7%

3. ND Stanley – 9.7%

4. Divide – 7.7%

5. VT Peak – 5.2%

ND Noreen remains the most popular hard red winter wheat variety planted with 16.6% of the acres followed by Ideal with 10.8% and the remaining acres planted to other varieties. The full variety survey can be found at https://www.ndwheat.com/crop-report
