ND Wheat News Releases

Taiwan is one of the top three buyers of U.S. hard red spring (HRS) wheat — a strong, consistent market that has long valued the quality North Dakota growers put in the bin every year.

On August 10, North Dakota State University cut the ribbon on the Bolley Agricultural Laboratory, a 170,700-square-foot research facility on the western edge of the Fargo campus that will shape the varieties North Dakota growers plant for decades to come.

When you ask Dr. Andrew Green what it takes to turn a first cross into a variety a grower can actually plant, his answer is pretty blunt: "Many steps."

Every summer, a yield estimate comes out of North Dakota's wheat fields that markets watch closely. But the tour behind that number is about something bigger. Each year, the U.S. hard red spring wheat milling and baking industry sends both veteran and first-time employees to North Dakota to learn more about the crop they'll be working with, joined by experienced agronomists, university scientists, and other industry experts. Recently, U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) celebrated the 60th anniversary of its Taipei office, a milestone that highlights one of our most consistent and high-value trade partnerships.

Fresh off the 70th-anniversary celebration of U.S. Wheat Associates (USW) in Tokyo, we were honored to welcome a Japanese trade delegation to the farm of USW Chairman and North Dakota grower, Jim Pellman.

In the fall of 2025, USW hosted 37 crop quality seminars for over 1,500 participants across 45 countries. While the core of the event is technical data—ranging from milling and dough quality to baking performance—the seminars also provide a platform to share the story of U.S. farming practices and provide production and price outlooks.
