Maintaining Relationships in North Asia: Taiwan & South Korea

In mid-March, a delegation of U.S. wheat farmers traveled to South Korea and Taiwan to strengthen ties with some of the world’s most quality-conscious buyers. Organized by U.S. Wheat Associates (USW), this trade team mission provided a firsthand look at how U.S. wheat moves from our local elevators to the vibrant noodle plants and bakeries of Seoul and Taipei. Don Hardy and Glendon Slaubaugh, NDWC board members were a part of the delegation.

The mission focused on the evolving needs of these premium markets. In South Korea, the team toured facilities like the Nongshim instant noodle plant and the Korea Baking School, a legacy institution supported by producer checkoff dollars since 1972. These visits highlighted a growing trend: as diets in North Asia shift, the demand for high-protein Hard Red Spring (HRS) wheat continues to rise.

“I’ve come to truly appreciate the tremendous effort that goes into our trade,” NDWC Board Member, Glendon Slaubaugh (District IV) said. “It’s eye-opening to see just how much dedication and hard work it takes to keep everything running. I always knew it required a lot, but it never ceases to amaze me how much commitment it really demands.”

By maintaining these personal connections and showing up at the table, we ensure that U.S. wheat, including North Dakota HRS, remains the first choice for the world 's most discerning millers and bakers.
