The USDA released its Winter Wheat Seedings report this morning, showing an expected decline in winter wheat acreage of 14 percent. Acreage is estimated at 37.1 million, compared to 43.3 last year and lower than most pre-report estimates. By class, HRW area is 27.8 million acres, down 12 percent from 2009. The largest acreage decreases are in Kansas, Montana, Oklahoma and Texas.
SRW seeded area is projected at 5.92 million acres, down 29 percent from 2009. White winter wheat area is down one percent at 3.33 million acres. The decline in acreage for winter wheat is due to lower prices, poor weather and a later than normal harvest. Winter wheat acres in North Dakota are estimated at 340,000, down from 580,000 last year.
Desert durum acres in Arizona and California are estimated at 205,000 acres, down 33 percent from the 2009 level and a total decline of 100,000 acres.
