Bake & Take Day, March 28, Promotes Fresh-Baked Wheat Foods

2009 Bake & Take
Bake and Take Day, celebrated the fourth Saturday in March, provides an opportunity to show others in the community you care. Since 1972 the North Dakota Wheat Commission has sponsored this event, which this year falls on March 28. Individuals or organizations are encouraged to give a gift of freshly baked wheat foods to show concern or appreciation to a friend, co-worker or neighbor.

Participants may use the recipes suggested by the Wheat Commission or bake one of their favorites. This year's featured recipes are Pumpkin Cranberry Muffins and Wheat Pecan Twists. "Pumpkin and cranberries are often considered "fall foods", but according to consulting home economist Margie Martin Lee, "You can enjoy these favorite foods the rest of the year by using dried cranberries and canned pumpkin. Combined, they make a delicious muffin." The Wheat Pecan Twists are made with half whole wheat flour, providing another avenue to incorporate whole grains in the diet.

Bake and Take Day is an excellent outreach project for both youth and adult service organizations. Both recipes lend themselves to such projects as they are easy to make and make a large enough quantity to distribute to several individuals.

To obtain free recipe brochures, send your request with name, complete mailing address and the quantity of brochures needed to Bake and Take, North Dakota Wheat Commission, 4023 State Street, Bismarck, ND 58503-0690. Or send your request by email to ndwheat@ndwheat.com.

Additional recipes for baked foods and nutritional information are available on the commission's web site at www.ndwheat.com or the Wheat Foods council site at www.wheatfoods.org.
