Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cake

1 3/4 cup boiling water
1 cup quick cooking oats
2 tablespoons margarine
1 cup white sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
2 eggs
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup semisweet mini chocolate chips, divided
2 tablespoons chopped walnuts

Pour water over oats and allow to stand for 10 minutes. Add margarine, white sugar and brown sugar and stir until margarine melts. Add applesauce. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Sift or stir flour, cocoa, salt and baking soda together and add to mixture. Mix well. Add 1/4 cup chocolate chips and stir.

Pour batter into 9 x 13-inch pan that has been coated with non-stick spray and dusted with flour. Sprinkle 1/4 cup chips and walnuts on top. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 to 30 minutes.
