Cheesy Onion Batter Bread

2 1/4 cups warm water, 110-120 degree F
1 package fast-rising yeast
2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup wheat germ
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, divided
2 tablespoons sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/3 cup minced onion
1 1/4 cups non-fat dry milk
1 egg
1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese


Mix warm water and yeast in large bowl. Add whole
wheat flour, wheat germ, 1/2 cup all-purpose flour, sugar, salt, onion
and dry milk. Blend well.

Mix egg and butter in small
bowl. Add to yeast mixture and blend well. Add
cheese. Add remaining 2 cups all-purpose flour and blend until
no flour streaks remain.

Spoon into two well-greased 9x5-inch loaf pans.
Cover with towel and allow to rise in warm place until
batter is level with tops of loaf pans. Bake at 375
degree F 20-30 minutes or until done. Immediately turn out
onto cooling racks.
